Name: Sideoats grama (Bouteloua curtipendula)
Distinguishing Characteristics: Leaves are up to 12 inches long and less than 1/2-inch wide, with long, pointed tips; there are widely-spaced long, pale hairs along the edges of the leaves, especially near the base
Height: To 3 feet
Blooms: July-September
Description: Small, reddish-orange flowers dangle along one side of slender stems
Comments: Commonly found on glades, dry prairies and savannas in the Ozarks and prairie regions. Provides excellent wildlife cover and is easy to establish from seed. Often flowers the first or second year from seed. It does not compete well with taller native grasses. Very little Missouri native or ecotype seed is available. Most of the seed on the market is improved varieties known as cultivars.
